How is fruiting prevented?
There are some great products out there that assist in preventing fruiting. Foliage spray the tree with "Florel" every spring to abort blossoming and prevent pollination. You can also use "Fruit Stopper", available at Lowe's and Home Depot. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.
How are Olive trees pollinated?
The wind pollinates the blossom.
How much water does an olive tree require?
Once established, olive trees typically need 25 gallons of water a month. Your soil type determines how much water will be needed. Consult with your contractor to do a percolation test and create an irrigation management program.
What is a percolation test?
A percolation test is a test to determine the water absorption rate of soil. This test is done by filling your planting pit 25% full of water and measuring the time it takes to absorb into the soil. If water doesn't drain sufficiently, drainage needs to be installed.
What is “girdling”?
Girdling occurs when the cambium all the way around the branches or trunk is damaged. If this happens the tree will not be able to systemically feed.
What is "crowning" and how do I do it?
Planting the tree 10" - 12" above finish grade is known as crowning. This creates oxygen resources to get to the top lateral root growth.
What is "Olive knot"? Will Olive knot hurt the tree?
Olive knot is very typical in field grown olives, and occurs during a hard frost that splits the cambium. When it rains on the split cambium, olive knot will set in. This can be controlled with copper solution spray. Olive knot will not kill the tree but can restrict fruit production.

What is "Verticillium"?
Verticillium is root rot, caused by poor percolation and the tree sitting in unabsorbed water.

What is the approximate weight of a tree?

What type of irrigation is best?
The use of inline drip is best for mature specimen trees. This is done by creating rings set on top of the root ball to provide an even, slow soak of water. For more details on this method of irrigation, please see our install guide.

What does it mean when the leaves turn yellow?
This is typically caused by a lack of water, lack of nitrogen or the natural defoliation of old leaves in the spring when the new leaf growth occurs, which is normal.
When can I trim my tree?
Your tree can be trimmed anytime of the year. Farmers typically trim in January to open up the tree for sun light to ensure a good flower set for production.
How do I unload the trees at delivery?

What does DBH mean?
Diameter of trunk at breast height.
What does BTH mean?
This measurement is used for palms and is based on the brown trunk height. The measurement starts starts the soil level and ends at the heart of the palm.
How do I perform a soil test?
Dig down 12" into the soil where you are going to plant and fill half a one gallon freezer bag with soil. Mark it with location , address, and date. You can send to Wallace labs for results. Make sure that you indicate that you are planting trees and ask for soil recommendations to amend with.
Do I need inspection of my trees at delivery?
This is your choice.

How does Green Pacific remove their trees?
A template is used to create center cuts evenly around tree. Cuts are then made out side of template 36" deep, then shovel cut the root ball to size and clean cut roots. This preserves maximum lateral root growth for a good transplant. When removing a tree, a choke rig should never be used.
What size truck and trailer deliver the trees?
We deliver Green Pacific trees with 48' step decks and conventional trucks. The typical height will be 14' 1" with a 12' width.
